“At that time, the challenges were many”,
says first mayor of Sorriso
At 86 years old and full of stories to tell about how the municipality has changed over the years, pioneer Alcino Manfrói keeps in his memory all the difficulties he faced to manage a newly formed city, but celebrates the progress of Sorriso, which turns 36 years old. on the 13th of May.
The history of the National Capital of Agribusiness began to be written in the 1970s, when the first residents arrived here. It was in January 1976 that Seu Alcino came here and believed in this land. “More and more people came here, and that's how Sorriso began to grow. I always said that here would be a city and many people doubted it, because it was all bush. But I insisted on saying: it's going to be a very beautiful city!”, says the pioneer.
In 1980, the agrovila became a district, belonging to the municipality of Nobres; and in 1986, it was elevated to municipality, through State Law nº 5.002, of May 13th. Seu Alcino, then, was the first mayor elected for a term of just two years, called the “buffer” term.
“At that time, the challenges were many. But as a former mayor I worked and did everything possible. We managed to bring water, electricity, telephone and many other improvements”, he says. He highlights the structuring of the city hall, the implementation of the State Bank, and the arrival of the Mário Spinelli State School.
Today, Mr. Alcino recalls the challenges he had overcome at that time and assures him that it was all worth it. “I feel proud and very happy to see that that small village that I saw born and believed in its potential, today has become one of the most promising cities in the country”, he celebrates.
