Fetal sexing is an exam to determine the baby's sex made from a sample of maternal blood (plasma), and has been increasingly sought after by moms who want to prepare revelation tea, layette and the baby's room.  The test should be performed from the eighth complete week of pregnancy, with a 99.93% success rate, and sensitivity and specificity greater than 99.9%. Deadlines shorter than this may give inconclusive results.

The test detects fragments of the Y chromosome circulating in the mother's plasma and, as these fragments are unique to males, the presence of this fraction in the mother's blood indicates male pregnancy, while its absence indicates female sex. This test can be performed if the mother is pregnant with identical twins (same placenta) or fraternal twins (two placentas). In the case of identical twins, the babies will be of the same sex.

In the case of fraternal twins (two placentas), a male result guarantees only that one of the babies is male, and the other can be a boy or a girl. But if the result is female, it guarantees that both babies will be girls.

Important: the use of drugs such as heparin-based anticoagulants can inhibit the test, leading to inconclusive results. In this case, it is recommended to talk to the doctor.
